This comprehensive one-day seminar introduces participants to AS5553 and specifically addresses counterfeit part risk mitigation methods in electronic design and parts management, supplier management, procurement, part verification, material control, and response strategies when suspect or confirmed counterfeit parts are discovered. The seminar will provide information and guidance in each of these key requirement areas. The latter part of the course will highlight counterfeit detection techniques and part compliance verification methods. Several examples of counterfeit parts will be reviewed in detail. The course will conclude with a hands-on learning exercise in identifying, under a microscope, characteristics that can be found in counterfeit electronic parts. Instructor(s): Phil Zulueta and Katherine Whittington Phil Zulueta manages the Hardware Technology Assurance Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he leads a team of engineers and technologists involved in Electronics Packaging Assurance Technologies, Non-destructive Evaluation, Electronics Manufacturing Technology Transfer (Training) and Certification, Electronics Inspection, Optical Metrology and Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Awareness and Control. He is a JPL Program Element Manager for the NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging (NEPP) Program, facilitates the Counterfeit Parts Working Group meetings at JPL and Chairs the SAE G-19 Counterfeit Electronic Parts Committee. He is also a Past-President of the International Microelectronics and Packaging Society (IMAPS). Prior to joining JPL, he was Western Regional Manager for Electro-Science Laboratories, a Program Manager for Ball Aerospace, an Engineering Group Manager for Hughes Microelectronics in Newport Beach, CA and a Microelectronics Process Engineer for Northrop Electronics. His education includes an MBA from Pepperdine University and a B.S. in Materials Engineering from California State University Long Beach. Katherine Whittington is a Staff Engineer in the Electrical Parts Engineering organization at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She works as an analog parts specialist, and has been teaching a counterfeit parts awareness class at JPL since 2008. She has been a member of JPL's Counterfeit Parts Working Group (CPWG) since 2007. She holds a B.S. in Physics from UC Berkeley. She has extensive flight experience and holds an Airline Transport Pilot certificate.

VENDOR REDUCTION MANDATE ? ? ?
Electronic Supply Chain Solution's involvement with the CACP, QLF, and SAE G-19 Counterfeit Committee, has provided the quality lessons learned that corporate mandates to adopt a policy of Vendor Reduction must evolve. Now more than ever the need to mitigate risks coming from independent brokers is paramount to a company's supply chain.This age old policy is being revisited by many.Those who've dieted understand that "loss of fat does not make you stronger."
The reduction of suppliers who do not meet minimum standards after a designated time line should continue. However, strength of the supply chain is achieved by maintaining an Approved Vendor List that not only meets statandard cost objectives and on-time deliveries, but quality as well.
The aerospace community has found that mandating suppliers to an AS9120 quality certification may insure a quality product. Suppliers must demonstrate that they are taking the same steps with their AVL and through education, making sure all employees understand and demand the flow down requirements needed to meet a company's objectives.
A new standard AS5553 shall soon apply to those in the military and aerospace community. Building a powerful AVL shall provide your company with the tools needed to meet the standard as well.

Who is Professor Quality?
Who is Professor Quality? Does he really exist or is he just a cartoon!
As ESCS Quality Manager I am asked that often and I can tell you he does exist and not like Santa Clause for those who believe. Professor Quality as we like to call him is actually the sum culture of the employees at Electronic Supply Chain Solutions. He is our symbol of the process of educating customers on the topic of quality. Just a little history……
1. Professor Quality insisted on being one of the first electronic distributors to become AS9120 Certified and now after our 5th AS9120 Aerospace Quality Audit we achieved a 100% score! Thanks Professor!

As ESCS Quality Manager I am asked that often and I can tell you he does exist and not like Santa Clause for those who believe. DO YOU PULL YOURS APART ? ......... ESCS DOES De-ENCAPSULATION
When it comes to electronic components.... some people pull theirs apart and some people just consume them without pulling them apart. ESCS uses a De-encapsulation process to microscopically inspect the substrate of the component, including the die and wafer markings, revealing the internal part numbers and logos supplied by the original component manufacturer.
