ESCS is not doing enough for our future engineers

ESCS wrote this article back in 2006 for EE Times and has been a sponsor of FIRST Team Krunch 79. It is soon time to see what our youth has created for the FIRST 2009 season...So Get ready to do something for our youth...and future engineers. Ask ESCS how you can get involved in robotics in your local area.

There are currently 1.3 million engineering technology jobs available in the United States without trained people to fill them. And there is a tremendous interest in engineering brewing in your local schools. A multinational nonprofit organization called FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) has made science, math, engineering and technology as cool for kids as sports are today.

FIRST was founded on partnerships with businesses, educational institutions and government. Many local businesses and Fortune 500 companies provide funding and volunteers to build robots that compete in local and national competitions. Building a winning robot is not the big payoff.

The key to FIRST's success is the work of more than 25,000 volunteer mentors, professional engineers, teachers and other adults working with students across the country. Through these volunteers, FIRST programs engaged over 70,000 young people last year.

At Electronic Supply Chain Solutions in Clearwater, Fla., we partner with Honeywell staff and others to help mentor and promote our future engineers at East Lake High School. The ELHS robot is called Krunch 79. Team 79 has learned that when using positive attitudes, the latest technology, the will to influence the community and committing acts of gracious professionalism on and off the playing field, the results can be immeasurable. Team 79 and its nonprofit organization, First Robotics Boosters, have created summer workshop programs for younger children and Girls Inc., an engineering program just for girls.

Team 79 creates several FIRST Lego League teams each year for younger students age 9 to 14, along with hosting tournaments at their school. After receiving national recognition for building a robotic arm for a family on the hit show Extreme Home Makeover, Team 79 placed first in the Florida regionals.

This year, ELHS introduces its Engineering Academy Program. Students can receive engineering college credits while in high school. Ask anyone from Team 79 what time it is and the answer is always, "It's Krunch time!"

At ESCS we try not only to promote engineering at our local schools, but also to prompt our engineering customers and suppliers to get involved in some way. By linking our Web site,www.escs9120.com, Web site to both www.usfirst.org and www.krunch79.com we can lead engineers to where all the excitement is. Then we ask them to use the FIRST map of the USA to drill down to their state or town and see what great companies or schools are nearby. We then ask them to get involved.

With 1.3 million U.S. engineering job openings and India and China seeking world dominance, everyone can invest something in our local children's future: Time, money, love and wisdom will foster a transformation.

It's Krunch time!

AS9120

Any company can quickly find themselves in legal hell if they do not take the required steps to mitigate thier risks as it relates to quality of the product it manufactures or distributes.

Some companies have promoted thier recieving staff to become the only inspector, while others have invested in IDEA's 1010A inspection standard or other published products and maintain a team of inspectors to help combat counterfeits. Well what about attrition or promotions? What about the inspectors interpretation, judgement, mood or the posibility of human error. Is 5 inspectors enough? ....... SHOULD INSPECTION BE YOUR ONLY LINE OF DEFENSE ?

We all know the awnser but.... Are you only using AS9120 certified distributors? Are you demanding that your distributor identify the source of the supplied component?

CHECK OUT http://www.safesourceseal.com/ from Electronic Supply Chain Solutions Inc.
It may save your company from legal hell!!!

Aerospace Contractors Search for a Formula to Combat Counterfeits Thru Vendor Reduction C-vR=? + ESCS= * *Benefits of AS9120 Certified Suppliers

Company minus vendors plus ESCS equals many benefits to your supply chain!
Add AS9120 certified companies. (ESCS .inspection lab shown above)
Many aerospace companies are now actively reducing vendors as one way to mitigate risks of counterfeits in their supply chain. Those suppliers who merely adopted ISO9001 certifications are finding that it may be O.K. for streamlining the manufacture or distribution of clock radios; however aerospace industry prime contractors have adopted the aerospace quality standards: AS9100 for manufacturing, AS9110 for repair & overhaul and AS9120 for stockist distributors.
AS9120 distributors that can buy small quantities or consolidate a diversity of products from multiple suppliers have found a new niche. This has the effect of reducing administration costs and providing a single point of contact, while improving the overall cost effectiveness of your supply chain.
Electronic Supply Chain Solutions, having achieved a 100% score in its 5th aerospace AS9120 audit, (see our audit on OASIS Database) is benefiting from its mantra of “Vendor Reduction Starts By Adding ESCS”.
Many of the leading Aerospace companies are intrigued by the level of sophistication ESCS has demonstrated with its unique suite of web products, commitment to quality, advocacy to combat counterfeits and the new industry buzz of their Safe Source Seal Aerospace Sourcing Assurance Program”, which is the first program shifting the responsibility for identifying the source of supply to the distributor rather than putting 100% of the burden on the customer’s inspection department. Yes our inspection lab is first rate but... we still leave the testing to 3rd parties.
ESCS’ Quality Manager Jan Salatino attributes the large increase in our aerospace customers to the fact that our AS9120 QMS system has matured, and for those who have accepted the mediocrity of ISO compliant or ISO9001 certified distributors, ESCS is a breath of fresh air. One quality manager recently told us “I never heard of you guys and now that I have taken the time to understand your capabilities and accomplishments, we refer to ESCS as “ the poster child of quality”. Jan said, “ESCS proudly practices quality as the fabric of who we are and what we do. I cannot understand for the life of me why any AS9100 aerospace contractor would continue to source products from companies who don’t have the quality procedures in place under AS9120 to flow down their customers’ stringent AS9100 requirements.”
“ESCS has recently redefined its “COTSS” website, showcasing the many “Component Off The Shelf Services” we provide. Our sales staff is prepared to discuss the benefits to aerospace customers that can be derived by partnering with Electronic Supply Chain Solutions. I think things will be fine in 2009.”

ESCS pioneers the first Aerospace Sourcing Assurance Program with source validation” for aerospace and military manufacturing industry

Electronic Supply Chain Solutions Inc Introduces

.

With the rapid increase in counterfeiting of electronic components, many aerospace prime contractors are demanding to know where their parts are coming from when sourced through the independent distributor market.

Many discussions with
aerospace quality professionals confirmed Safe Source Seal is the only verifiable program to address this need.

Safe Source Seal identifies each component on your packing slip according to a four tier designation:

(1.) Direct from the component manufacturer;
(2.) From an authorized franchise distributor;
(3.) Having 3rd party testing for authenticity and/or functionality (according to your purchase order conditions) (4.) Received with a copy of the original manufacturer’s CofC.

Only AS9120quality certified companies can participate in the program, as they are mandated to provide all pedigree documentation during their annual quality audit.

Why not share this with your Supply Chain Quality Management team? Find out why other prime contractors are turning to
Safe Source Seal, and how Electronic Supply Chain Solutions is providing this unmatched level of sourcing assurance.

Review the program at http://www.safesourceseal.com/ and provide your quality team with the tools they need to combat counterfeits.

Find out if your AS9120quality independent distributor may participate. If they are an AS9120 certified indepenent distributor that can meet these high standards, ask them to learn how they can participate in the SSS quality program to help you combat counterfeits. ESCS President gives keynote speech at the 2008 First Aerospace Congress

This years Future Aerospace Congress was well represented by senior members of prime contractors such as: ABB, Boeing, Bell Helicopter, NASA, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and United Space Alliance, just to name a few.
The three day event consisted of roundtable discussions on the Evolution of Advanced Materials, recycling, automation and the importance of full disclosure.
A second round table discussion was on Supply Chain Strategy including best practices, sourcing and overall effectiveness. As an owner of an electronic component distribution company, Electronic Supply Chain Solutions’ President Matthew Heaphy III provided other panel members a unique prospective as to the approach his company has taken to “Combat Counterfeits" with a free web site designed to educate the electronics industry. Mr. Heaphy discussed what it meant to be an AS9120 Quality Certified company and how teaming up with organizations such as GIDEP, AIA, IDEA, ERAI and his association with the CACP (Coalition Against Counterfeiting and Piracy) were just some of the steps companies can take to protect their supply chain. ESCS also showcased a process called ICPHOTOSYNTH.com which captures every single lot code of every single date code of every part that enters ESCS during the inspection process.
This year's Future Aerospace Congress also featured several keynote speakers during the event. The first speaker this year was Electronic Supply Chain Solutions President Matthew Heaphy III on the topic of “Best Practices in Supply Chain Sourcing to Combat Counterfeits” During his speech Mr. Heaphy touched on many of the issues identified during the panel discussion but also conveyed the size and scope of the counterfeiting problem in the USA and the trickle down effect it has on all U.S. citizens. He also outlined some of the steps companies need to take to protect themselves. As an independent distributor that services the aerospace industry ESCS is asked to procure obsolete products that are required to maintain aircraft for many years. ESCS uses third party testing and evidence based protocols to mitigate our customers risk especially as it relates to the loss of human lives. A watch or DVD seems like a victimless crime; however, intellectual property is stealing the life blood of companies today. Information sharing is becoming more popular when conducting business with supply chain partners. But how can you protect your IP? This topic was on the minds of everyone in attendance and many companies requested private discussions with ESCS to explore their options.
Electronic Supply Chain Solutions staff has been collecting data as part of their commitment to a safe supply chain and has published an Industry Assessment entitled Awareness and Industry Efforts to Combat Counterfeits in Aerospace & Military Electronic Component Procurement
By clicking on the above link you can learn the views and prospectives of many aerospace industry leaders and use that information to Combat Counterfeits at your company.
ESCS has also tried to raise awareness in the industry by offering its product called “Infomins” Have you taken yours today? Infomins are like vitamins that give you the information you need to make sound business decisions. Visit www.infomins.com.
Mr. Heaphy wrapped up his speech on Best Practices in the Supply Chain by announcing thier latest brainchild of www.escsgps.com which navigates to the information you need. This GPS “Graphic Procurement System” utilizes many of ESCS graphics to hyperlink you to our proprietary suite of web products designed to help buyers and engineers become better informed.
